What does it mean to be an ally in the workplace? Vanguard chief diversity officer Crystal Hardie Langston explains how we can unite in actively supporting one another and why that’s important.
Producer: So, how’s it going?
Crystal Hardie Langston: Good to see everybody.
I have been at Vanguard for 16 years. Which is crazy to say. I’ve never been anywhere for 16 years. (laughs).
Question [on screen]: What is one action anyone can take to create a more inclusive environment?
Crystal Hardie Langston: One action that anyone can take to create a more inclusive environment is to show up as an ally for others and being an ally means being intentional about learning about others’ cultures, backgrounds, experiences.
You don’t have to be a part of an underrepresented group to be a good listener to the experiences of those that belong to those communities. A couple of different ways to act as an ally include advocating for others as they seek to get access to different opportunities, helping folks to find different opportunities in the organization, and ensuring that others are heard and respected.
